“Both Culture and History have been generous to these parts of Dalmatia in providing inspiration to artists as far back as the Antiquity. They created their art in the stone, walls and palaces of its towns and urban centres, in buildings made of stone that have become most memorable characteristics of central Dalmatia."

Split
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with a population of approx 200,000, and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. Emerging from a Greek settlement founded between the 3rd and 4th centuries, the height of Split's history came in 295 AD when Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered a residence to be built there for his retirement. It took 10 years to build this magnificent palace and Diocletian lived there until his death in 313AD. Roman rulers continued to use it as a retreat. In the 7th century, when the Roman colony of Salona was abandoned, many of its inhabitants sought sanctuary behind the place's high walls and their descendants live there till this present day.
What to see
Naturally, the most important sight is Diocletian's Palace. Next is the Peristyle, being the main open space in the palace it is surrounded by a colonnade of 6 columns to the eastern and western sides and a arch, decorated with garlands in the centre. On the eastern side of the Peristyle is the cathedral of "Sveti Duje".. On the western side is the Narodni Trg (People's Square) and the old town hall which was built in the 15th century.
Museums and Galleries in Split
Split has a long tradition of collecting and caring for monuments. This interest appeared as early as the Renaissance.
At the beginning of the 16th century, a collection of Antique stone epitaphs were stored in the home of the Split nobleman Dmino Papali (today's city Museum) and they were described in one of his friend's, Marko Marulic'c tracts.
The Archbishop's Museum was founded by mid-18th century, and in the 1820 the Archaeological Museum, the oldest Croatian Museum.
